on March 8, 2014hmmm, my description vanished. This is a tobacco pipe. It's obviously in the shape of a wooden shoe, and made c. 1930 by a German pipe maker. I have a large pipe collection so that was my first subject matter and yes, I took images that had several pipes in the photo.
I chose to let the handle extend out of frame. The wood grain of the shelf is slightly blurred, but that is because I removed dust with the Dust and Scratches filter in Photoshop. The dust was more distracting than the slightly blurred wood grain. Next time I'll dust first. Taken with my macro lens, this pipe is small. It's less tha 2" from toe to heel. The stem spins around so it fits in a pocket.

on March 7, 2014Sorry to be the photo hog/photo !+$% this week, but there's a LOT of wood in and around the house that was inspirational.
This is a c. 1930 wooden shoe pipe from my pipe collection (yes, I took lots of photos of many pipes together, but they didn't make the cut). I opted to have the handle extend off the frame. I might have wished for a tad of extra negative space at the bottom, but I'm fine with this. Due to the fact that the shelf was a bit dusty, and the dust was distracting (not charming), I opted to blur it out. While I would have liked the sharp wooden grain receding out of focus, I thought this version was better and the sacrifice was made. I used a macro lens.
The pipe was actually made in Germany and the handle turns 180˚ so it can easily fit in a pocket. It's tiny. About 2".
